"Christ Carrying the Cross"

G.P. Rizzoli il Giampietrino "Milano1485-1553)

Giovan Pietro Rizzoli known as Giampietrino (Milan 1485-1553)
"Christ Carrying the Cross"

Oil on the table
Period 1530 c.
Table size 55 x 75

The work is painted on a single poplar panel as was customary in the most important workshops of the early 16th century.

Excellent state of conservation.

This magnificent work, a true pearl of the early Lombard Renaissance, is evidently referable to the catalog of Giovan Pietro Rizzoli known as Giampietrino.

In addition to the stylistic characteristics, truly unique and unmistakable, the attribution is confirmed by comparisons with some of his analogous paintings, in particular with the panel attributed to the Master exhibited at the Diocesan Museum in Milan, which unequivocally presents all the identical pictorial peculiarities. (See photos)

The version of the "Portacroce" proposed here differs in the face of Christ turned towards the viewer on the left side and in the different position of the hands.

We find the same posture in a table recently auctioned by DOROTHEUM of Wienna valued at 80,000 - 120,000 and sold for 75,000 euros plus auction fees (94,050 euros).

Among the known versions of this subject, this is certainly one of the most interesting performed by the Milanese Master who, working closely with Leonardo, assimilates his pictorial lesson and a strong charge of esotericism that distinguishes the faces of the characters depicted.

The work is in excellent condition with a very fine and uniform crimping on the entire pictorial surface. (See the detail in high definition)
