A splendid work painted on copper, rare and of great charm.
The subject is in fact almost impossible to find in ancient European art, while it was one of the favorite themes of Orthodox art, particularly in Russian icons.
The best depictions of this extraordinary episode, where Christ defeats death and symbolizes the triumph of Christianity, are produced by the Flemish Masters between the 16th and 17th centuries. The artists of Antwerp stand out in particular, including Jacob de Backer and Frans Francken, in whose circle we must include the author of this very interesting copper, an excellent example of Flemish Mannerism of the late 16th century.
