"Marie-Madeleine"

XVIIe siècle

"Mary Magdalene"
Tuscany first half of the 17th century
Oil painting on canvas
Canvas 84 x 62  frame 90 x 68

This 17th century canvas depicting a very attractive Magdalene is a truly fascinating painting who, while showing the iconographic attributes of her repentance, expresses an irrepressible femininity.
The splendid features of her, with her eyes wide open and her hair down as well as the pose that her body seems to offer, are the image of her seduction. The message of the female who leads into temptation is evident as are the references to penance of the skull and the crucifix.
The Author is endowed with a great communicative ability and the work is distinguished by an unusual lightness in depicting a theme often full of exasperated suffering. We are certainly in front of an excellent example of early 17th century Tuscan Baroque painting and the angelic face of the Magdalene with her long, curly hair is reminiscent of the magnificent figures of Lippi and Botticelli in a 17th century reinterpretation.
The canvas is in good condition and the signs of time do not disturb the reading of the painting which still offers all its pictorial and chromatic characteristics.
