Large copper painting depicting a typical Flemish scene inside a particularly lively tavern full of customers.
The work is executed in an exceptionally fine manner both in the description of the characters and in the infinite variety of objects present within the rooms.
The scene, in fact, stands out from the usual Flemish works for the large quantity of details that animate the tavern. The composition is divided into two distinct situations and sees in the foreground a group of cheerful smokers intent on lighting their pipes in a festive atmosphere. On the right side of the painting, in the background and in the shadows, another group of peasants drinks and smokes near the fire of a fireplace. The door opens to let in a woman holding a jug of wine. The author's ability in rendering the faces that characterize the protagonists is truly remarkable, as is the miniaturistic precision in the depiction of objects and pottery that furnish the tavern.
The liveliness of the colours, in the most typical shades of the Dutch Flemish school, contributes to expressing a message of festive joy, which involves the viewer in a very pleasant way. The copper is beautifully sized and the interesting subject lends itself perfectly to furnishing a kitchen or dining area, attracting interest and curiosity in an atmosphere of warmth and joy.
The state of conservation of the painting is excellent.
