In one of the rooms of the new south wing of the National Gallery of Palazzo Barberini in Rome (no. 37, dedicated to painting in the capital between 1670-1750), four canvases by the painter Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746) are displayed where as many continents:
Europe, Africa, Asia and America.
They are preparatory studies, in practice sketches, in oil on canvas, measuring 74 x 57.5 cm, carried out in 1709 on commission from Pope Clement XI Albani (1649-1721) for the mosaic decoration project on the pendentives of the chapel of the Baptistery in St. Peter's. (See the photos that we publish here)
The Four Parts of the World are depicted with as many women, surrounded by identifying attributes of distinctive, natural and cultural traits.
Our canvas, practically identical in features, chromatism and size, is a variant of America very similar to the definitive solution and is part of the preparatory works carried out in the Master's workshop.
The painting, coming from an important Roman family, is an interesting historical as well as artistic document.
the canvas is in excellent condition and is complete with its original frame, identical to those exhibited in Palazzo Barberini.
