Boxwood carvings
Base and cross in ebonized pine.
Late 17th century
Measurements H. cm. 50 x 22 depth 11
Excellent conservation

Splendid sculptural group in boxwood depicting Christ Crucified and the Virgin kneeling at the foot of the cross with her hands joined and looking up at the Son. The scene of Calvary is completed by St. John the Apostle and the Magdalene, represented by a micro-sculpture and by the vase of ointments placed on the sides of the Cross as in the most traditional of compositions.
It is a work of notable finesse performed between the 17th and 18th centuries in the famous Lombard workshop of the Fantoni, inimitable master sculptors of this type of sacred subjects. The technical and stylistic characteristics are a perfect example of their creations and easily approach their main exponent Andrea Fantoni (Bergamo 1659-1734).
