Lamentation of the Virgin whit Magdalene on Christ

Roman school of XVIIth century

Lamentation of the Virgin with the Magdalene on Christ
Roman school of XVIIth century
Oil on canvas
Canvas 76 x 102 frame 90 x 117

This beautiful painting from the 17th century depicts the dramatic moment that sees the lifeless body of Christ taken down from the Cross and lying on the ground on a white cloth.
The Mother erect with her hands in prayer and the kneeling Magdalene kissing the hand of Jesus, despair in excruciating pain. In the dark sky a light shines on three cherubs.
Two angels standing next to Christ show the symbols of the passion and their naked bodies with lively complexions contrast with the stretched, elongated and lifeless figure. The plays of light and shadows are very marked and the chiaroscuro effect creates the volume of the characters and gives the scene three-dimensionality as well as increasing its drama.

A beautiful gilded and molded frame completes the work perfectly.
The last photo refers to the state of the painting before the small restorations.
