(Allegory of Charity)
Oil painting on canvas
Period II ^ half of the 16th century

Canvas size 65 x 56 frame 85 x 74
Excellent state of conservation

Splendid late 16th century canvas depicting the Madonna and Child surrounded by three pretty little angels. The scene is really very pleasant, in a context of infinite sweetness and serenity. The maternal gaze of the Virgin, the central figure of the painting, lowers towards the Son in a gesture full of love. The three little angels smile joyfully, reassured by the protective figure of the Virgin. It is the allegorical image of "Charity" described with the Maternal Figure who gives her love of her as well as her Son, even to other little ones in need. The theme is described here in a particularly fine way, with a very balanced, perfectly symmetrical composition, where the protagonists completely fill the canvas, illuminated from the front and in great prominence against the dark background. The work conveys positive feelings and the Christian message is evident. The solemn stillness, far removed from the exuberant baroque descriptions, and the joyful atmosphere, contrary to the severity of the Nordic authors, belong to the canons of Italian painting of the 16th century, with particular reference to the pictorial and chromatic characteristics of the Romagna school of the 16th century.
