Francesco Lavagna (Napoli, 1684 - 1724) attribuito

Francesco Lavagna
(Naples, 1684 - 1724)
attributed
"Still life of flowers and watermelon outdoors in a garden"

oil painting on canvas
vintage frames in silver leaf wood
Measurements (cm.): 129 x 91
with frame 144 x 106

The still life proposed is an excellent example of the aesthetic taste achieved by the workshop of Francesco Lavagna (active in Naples between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries), a "flourishing painter" among the protagonists of the Neapolitan school of the eighteenth century, whose training, in analogy with Gaspare Lopez, took place in Andrea Belvedere's atelier.

The canvas documents the expressive qualities as well as the great rocaille talent of the painter, capable of a chromatic sensitivity of considerable visual impact, enhanced by the skilful games of veiling and thicknesses of material, but above all of a brightness that radiates without obstacles and yields.

The compositional structure is typical of the painter's repertoire, who loved to create his floral compositions, often combined with other types of plants including vegetables, fruit or mushrooms, set en plein air within gardens; the flower bouquets are harmoniously colorful, placed inside vases or baskets arranged with apparent randomness.
Given the excellent condition of the canvas, we decided to propose them in their current state, without any restoration work.
