Sainte Catherine d'Alexandrie.

Southern Italy, XVII th century

Polychrome and silvered wooden sculpture depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

17th century.

Origin: Southern Italy.

Height 140 cm, width 70 cm, depth 60 cm

A splendid large-scale work sculpted in a round shape and full-length in an excellent manner.

The figure is erect in a solemn pose and the vertical line still maintains the Renaissance canons.

The movement of the clothes is extraordinary with an incredible sequence of folds and drapes highlighted by the bright silver reflections.

The Saint wears a Princess crown on her head to stop the long mane of wavy hair that falls down her back.

The expression on her face is truly extraordinary.

The glassy eyes are a characteristic of Baroque sculpture in Southern Italy and contribute to making the gaze of an impressive realism

It is evidently a high-level work. The Saint presents herself in her sumptuous beauty with splendid features and a very pleasant appearance. The sculpture in fact stands out, in addition to an exceptional sculptural quality, also for an extremely elegant image and of great unusual charm for a subject of a religious nature.

Excellent state of conservation.

A professional restoration was carried out which brought the work back to perfect conditions.

The large statue is entirely sculpted in the round so that it can be admired on all sides when the Saint was carried in procession on the day of her feast.
