On either side of the Saint, the figures of Christ blessing and Our Lady of Pokrov holding up the veil to protect the believers.
Patron Saint of Russia, well known and loved throughout the world, Saint Nicholas is invoked as defender of children and protector of sailors, virgin girls of marriageable age, schoolchildren, fishermen, sailors, pharmacists, lawyers and traders.
He was born around 280 AD. in Patara, in Asia Minor and was bishop of Myra, in Lycia, where he died between 345 and 352. In 1087 his remains were brought by ship to Bari, where they are still found.
The icon is distinguished by the remarkable finesse of the paint and by an unusual luminosity, accentuated by the bright colors on the golden background.
We underline both the excellent quality of the work and its excellent state of conservation.
