Still Life of Flowers

Gaspare Lopez (Napoli 1677-Firenze1732)

Gaspare Lopez (Naples 1667-1732) "Still Life of Flowers"
 Oil on canvas
early 18th century
Canvas 139 x 170 frame 150 x 180

Extraordinary still life of large dimensions, particularly complex and rich in botanical species. It is a typical example of the pictorial skills of Gaspare Lopez known as Gaspare dei Fiori, realizer of important floral still lifes active initially in Naples and later in Rome and Florence. The lively composition depicted here is characteristic of the themes proposed by the Neapolitan artist specialized in works dominated by large cascades of flowers and set outdoors among natural elements. The work, despite its large size, is completely redundant with flowers and, as in its most important creations, the context of the setting is particularly elaborate. The rocks wet by the water that runs through them in cascades represent an ideal background and are represented in an excellent way. Excellent state of conservation with old professionally executed relining.
