The Repentance of Mary Magdalene

Emilian school of the 17th century

The Repentance of Mary Magdalene
Emilian school
Oil on canvas
17th century
Canvas 57 x 45 frame 75 x 62
Very good condition

A Magdalene of great beauty, elegantly dressed and bejeweled, is depicted in the culminating moment of her repentance. With her eyes turned to heaven and full of tears, she brings her hand towards the pearl necklace to tear it away, giving up the casual life, dedicated to her ephemeral pleasures, to embrace unconditional love for Christ.

The painting describes the scene in an elegant way, evidently made for a placement in domestic environments and offers an unusual image of the attractive protagonist.

In fact, the scene is far from the exaggerated representations, imbued with a gloomy atmosphere, which see the Magdalene with her face disfigured by pain next to the skull and the Crucifix.

Although the work depicts the same episode, it conveys the message of repentance in a manner more suited to the needs of private clients and lends itself to easy placement in domestic environments.

It is certainly a canvas which, although to be considered of religious connotation, is particularly pleasant inserted in any context.

The painting is in excellent condition and complete with a beautiful 19th century gilt frame
