This work depicts the Madonna with the Christ Child.
Mother and son exchange glances—the Virgin’s expression is melancholic, while the infant Jesus’s is lively.
She holds Him with infinite tenderness, parting the cloth to reveal Him to the viewer.
The Child, entirely nude, turns to meet His mother’s gaze—an unusual pose that makes the composition particularly engaging.
Beyond the arrangement of the figures, the canvas is distinguished by its excellent use of color, featuring harmonious combinations and the artist’s great skill in rendering subtle gradations (sfumato).
The painting can be attributed to an inspired 17th-century Tuscan artist who imbued this devotional image—a subject often rendered in a repetitive, formulaic manner—with innovative qualities.
Indeed, the face of the Child—with His curly blond hair and bright, wide-open eyes—as well as the features of the Mother, do not appear to correspond to any other known paintings of the same subject.
The canvas is in excellent condition and is housed in a magnificent antique frame that is carved, lacquered, and gilded.
