This beautiful composition depicting the Virgin with her Child in her arms, adored by the little St. John the Baptist, is undoubtedly attributable to the work of Jacopo Amigoni.
The faces of the protagonists, especially that of the blond and curly Child, are in fact absolutely unmistakable.
The dark background, which Amigoni prefers, brings out the luminous complexions and accentuates the volume of the faces and bodies.
At the end of his long and extraordinary career he moved to Madrid, Spain, and became court painter to Ferdinand XVI. His workshop became famous especially in portraiture, producing a series of exquisite works with the Virgin as the protagonist and this painting is part of this production.
There is a strong Neapolitan influence in his painting acquired from Solimena and De Mura as well as a Venetian pictorial vein matured during his stay in Venice.
Our canvas is an excellent example of his very elegant painting which is among the most sought after in the artistic panorama of the 18th century.
