Vierge and Child with Saint John

Joos van Cleve

"The Virgin and Child with San Giovannino"

Flemish school of the 16th century
Joos van Cleve (Kleve1485-Antwerp1541) circle

Fascinating painting depicting a sweet Virgin and Child with the little Saint John the Baptist.
It is an interesting Flemish work to be placed in the circle of Joos Van Cleve with all the characteristics of his extraordinary painting.
The faces still maintain the Gothic features with marked shades to round them and give them plasticity, and the strong colors are part of the repertoire of the great Antwerp master.
The representation of the two children is also typical of his works.
The style of the figures is very reminiscent of the somatic details of 15th century Tuscan paintings from which Van Cleve is strongly influenced.
The representation of the Renaissance palace of Italian taste could also advance the hypothesis of a work made in Italy by a Flemish author trained in the Antwerp workshop.
In fact, there are many Nordic masters attracted by the beauties of our cities and their artistic heritage who made study trips to Italy.
The canvas is in good condition with the faces of the protagonists that have not undergone repainting and have kept all their beauty.
The large palace in the background is also intact.
The painting is complete with a beautiful antique gilded frame with a dense acanthus leaf decoration.
