Circle of Guido Reni
Emilia end of the 17th century
Oil painting on canvas
Canvas size 66 x 50.5 frame 81 x 65
Guilloche gilded frame from the 19th century
The work is in good condition.

Splendid depiction of the Virgin receiving the divine message from the Archangel Gabriel.
Of remarkable stylistic perfection, the painting portrays the face of the Madonna with splendid features, slightly in profile and modestly facing downwards. The author, endowed with great pictorial ability, is to be identified in the large group of painters gravitating around the creative genius of Guido Reni, who will include among him pupils excellent interpreters of his inventions. The work, in fact, erroneously attributed in the past to Sassoferrato, is part of the many images of the Virgin Mary made by the great Master. The incredible grace of the work, which lent itself well to private devotion, was subsequently reproduced to embellish the homes of the most important Bolognese families.
